Drift: Notes for An Exhibition

The opportunity to assemble this small exhibition from works owned by Michael Straus presented The Fuel & Lumber Company with the unique opportunity to work in reverse. Rather than start with a specific conceptual query or theme based on a particular ism, movement or material, we were able to explore the collection and select objects that we were intuitively drawn to; trusting that consistencies and connections between the diverse works would emerge. The works selected move fluidly across disciplines and generations, through conceptual rigor and playful material exploration, to images that seem to mark time, while simultaneously reminding one of Billy Pilgrim, unstuck and wandering to, from, through, anywhere, nowhere, here, there, then and now.

Drift was curated from artworks owned by the Michael Straus Collection in Birmingham, Alabama. The exhibition includes work by Vito Acconci, Robert Barry, William Eggleston, Max Ernst, Ellen Harvey, Alex Katz, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Roger Minick, Robert Motherwell, Robert Smithson, Alec Soth, Lawrence Weiner, and John Wesley.
